There are many summer musical opportunities in the valley such as String Play, the Tetra String Quartet Camp and other string quartet camps. You can find links to these fabulous camps below:
StringPlay, founded in 2013, is designed to provide a fun, creative, and educational experience for string players in the Phoenix/Metro area. At the camp, students participate in a variety of collaborative exercises with their peers from other schools, engaging with and learning from each other. Various activities include working on performance skills through theatre games, composing, improvising, learning music theory, playing Bach, fiddling, and covering pop tunes—all with the aim of building creative musical skills while having as much fun as possible!
The mission of our workshop is to enrich the musical development of string players through studying the art of chamber music. Each student is placed in an ensemble and will participate in daily rehearsals and coachings with members of the Tetra String Quartet and Taylor Morris. Additionally, students will explore fiddling and improvisation to learn how to think and play ‘outside the box.’ This workshop provides a sense of community for musicians, teaching students how to function as a group, communicate effectively, and prepare a musical work for performance.
The 2019 String Quartet Camp and Bass Workshop has two locations! Session I will be held at Desert Cross Lutheran Church, 8600 South McClintock Drive, in Tempe. Session II will be held at Camelback Bible Church, 3900 E. Stanford Drive in Paradise Valley. Both churches have beautiful facilities in locations that are easily accessible. As usual, our camp will offer the same great faculty and excellence in music making that our campers have come to expect. Please join us to make the 2019 camps the best ever! This year’s camp will offer master classes for ensembles, a rhythm and ear training class, and choir and orchestra for all instrumentalists. Our day will begin at 8:30 am and conclude at 3:30 pm, with a lunch break provided daily. There will be performance opportunities for everyone, and our hope is to provide each student with a unique, rich and memorable musical experience. As a participant in the bass workshop, students will have the opportunity to work with Dr. Dan Swaim for at least 2 hours daily. Bass activities will include: solo performance, technique classes and ensembles. Bass students will also receive orchestral training each day.
